Larry Flynt, Hustler Magazine Publisher, Dies

Larry Flynt, Hustler magazine publisher, accidental First Amendment icon and the mastermind behind the global Hustler enterprises, including Gentlemen's Clubs, apparel, and accessories, has died of heart failure in his Hollywood Hills home. He was 78.

Flynt, synonymous with the porn industry, tapped into the degenerate underbelly of America with his raunch, vulgar and offensive portrayal of women. Unashamed and without restraint, Flynt understood the skin industry and maintained his edge by continually pushing the boundaries especially to the point of national outrage and shock.

Born in Kentucky, a high school dropout, he purchased a bar from his mother. Advertising topless waitresses, the once nearly bankrupt establishment quickly turned a profit and Flynt purchased two additional bars following the same business model. He quickly became solvent and the rest, as some would say, is hustler history.

His instincts paid off. The $400million Hustler enterprises, with prime Beverly Hills office space, and even an air if respectability, capsulated the wheel-chair bound Flynt to the top of the sex industry.

He was a porn king and those who participated in his industry were there by consent. His views of bi-racial couples, cost him his ability to walk. Shot, from a courthouse lunatic, Flynt was permanently paralyzed.

Targeted repeatedly for his sensationalizing views and encroachment of the Frist Amendment boundaries, he led the fight against censorship and the definition of Obscenity in American society.

The People Vs. Larry Flynt, a film directed by Milos Forman in 1996, chronicled Flynt and his continued clash with religious institutions and the law.
