Chicago Arts: Expo Chicago Partners with Citywide Cultural Institutions for Annual Expo Art Week

The International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art announced the eighth annual EXPO ART WEEK, September 16 – 22, 2019, presented in conjunction with Choose Chicago, the city's tourism and marketing organization, and Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

With the EXPO as its centerpiece the citywide embrace of the annual introduction to the arts season features museum exhibitions, gallery openings and special events in partnership with the city's most prestigious cultural institutions.


LA Arts: David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation Coming to Los Angeles for Art Exhibition


"As we celebrate the eighth edition of EXPO CHICAGO, our strategic citywide alignments ensure that Chicago during September is the place to be to engage with global art, architecture and design," said President and Director Tony Karman. "There is a growing list of institutional exhibition alignments, programs and installations that will occur throughout the city during EXPO ART WEEK, each poignantly illustrating the importance that artists, architects and designers have on society."

Key 2019 EXPO ART WEEK alignments include:

Art on theMART: Charles Atlas and Petra Cortright

Art on theMART, the largest permanent digital art projection in the world, will unveil new commissions by Charles Atlas and Petra Cortright, as well as a collaboration with EXPO CHICAGO's OVERRIDE | A Billboard Program, projecting an approximately 25-minute moving image program of contemporary art on loop for two hours across the 2.5 acre river-façade of theMART (formerly Merchandise Mart). The public unveiling event will take place on September 21, beginning at 6:30pm.

A /Dialogues panel with Charles Atlas will take place at EXPO CHICAGO on Saturday, September 20.

Chicago Architecture Biennial

The third edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, entitled ...and other such stories, addresses the potency of space, architecture and the natural world in a global context. Led by Artistic Director and Chicago-based curator Yesomi Umolu, joined by co-curators Sepake Angiama and Paulo Tavares, the central exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center extends into the city, highlighting the transformative global impact of innovation across creative fields that affect the way we live, work, and organize society around the world. The biennial is free and open to the public from September 19, 2019 – January 5, 2020.


SF Arts: Montague Gallery Presents "Radiance: New Works by Lino Tagliapietra"


Stony Island Arts Bank

In The Absence of Light: Gesture, Humor and Resistance in The Black Aesthetic Selections from the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection Bringing together artistic practices that not only reveal some sense of interiority, but by their very nature, reflect distance through laughter, painting gesture and isolation—the Rebuild Foundation partnered with Beth Rudin DeWoody to share the works of over 20 of today's most important practitioners within the contemporary art w orld. Organized by Theaster Gates in collaboration with Beth Rudin DeWoody and Laura Dvorkin from the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, the exhibition features work by Glenn Ligon, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Henry Taylor and more. From September 19 through December 29, the Stony Island Arts Bank (6760 S. Stony Island Avenue) will host these seminal artists along with artist talks, curated walk through's, public discussions and film series.

The Peninsula Chicago x Kasmin

REVERB: Works by James Nares, Iván Navarro and Naama Tsabar The Peninsula Chicago and Kasmin present a special exhibition entitled, REVERB. The exhibition features works by James Nares, Iván Navarro and Naama Tsabar, whose practices explore movement, sound and electricity, engaging with the rhythm and structure of the urban environment. On view at The Peninsula Chicago from September through October, the exhibition transforms the public areas of the hotel.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Samson Young: World Fair Music Hong Kong-based artist and composer Samson Young presents a public performance of original music composed for the 1933 World's Fair, "A Century of Progress" on Wednesday, September 18 from 5:30 – 7pm at the Chicago Symphony Center (220 S. Michigan). The performance aligns with Young's first US solo museum exhibition, Samson Young: Silver moon or golden star, which will you buy of me? on view the Smart Museum of Art.

A /Dialogues panel with the artist will take place as part of the Symposium: On Utopia on Friday, September 20.

Navy Pier

The Ship of Tolerance The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Foundation presents The Ship of Tolerance, a multidimensional project, featuring a large-scale installation of a ship located in Polk Bros. Park at Navy Pier's entrance. The mission of the Ship of Tolerance is to educate and connect the youth of different continents, cultures and identities through the language of art. The conceptual art piece reflects how divergent cultures interpret tolerance and how these interpretations overlap. The installation will be on view from September 17 through Sunday, October 6.
