Mad Max Proves The Redux is Gold Earns Ten Nominations; The Revenant Stuns with 12; The Martian, Seven; Spotlight, Six

Suspended reality fared best at the 88th OSCAR nominations with The Revenant earning a stunning 12 nominations, post-apocalyptic drama Mad Max: Fury Road ten, space odyssey thriller The Martian from director Ridley Scott, seven, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, five.

Held at the Academy of Arts & Sciences, Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, the film industry highest honors were announced by Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Guillermo del Toro, John Krasinski and Ang Lee.

Favorites Bryan Cranston as the cantankerous blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, Brie Larson in a breakout role as kidnapped and captive victim "Ma" and Rooney Mara as the shy, unsure of her sexuality, Therese were also nominated.

While suspended reality topped voters lists, exposes also grabbed the hearts and nominations with Catholic church pedophile scandal Spotlight earning six and ROOM, the modern day story of a child gone missing only to escape seven years later suffering with re-entry issues she returns home, earning four.

Jennifer Lawrence also received a nomination for her role as Joy Magano in the David O. Russell film "JOY." She is the youngest actor in the history of the academy to earn four nominations.

Del Toro and Lee announced the nominees in 11 categories at 5:30 a.m. PT, followed by Boone Isaacs and Krasinski for the remaining 13 categories at 5:38 a.m. PT, at the live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives.

Academy members from each of the 17 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members on Saturday, January 23, at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Active members of the Academy are eligible to vote for the winners in all 24 categories

 
The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
