As Ethan tries to stop the sequence a mushroom cloud detonates in the background.

Skyscraper Review – A Solid Disaster Film Guaranteed to Entertain

The explosion jolts him awake as the doorbell rings at the safehouse in Belgrade. A package arrives containing the new IMF assignment. The Syndicate, which took him hostage in a record store in London, has branched into a more lethal group called The Apostles.

The Apostles have stolen three units of Plutonium, of which they are planning to detonate in three cities. Hunt, and his team, Luther Stickell, played by Ving Rhames and Benji Dunn, played by Simon Pegg have found the arms dealer who has bought the units and is ready to sell it.

The deal goes bust and the plutonium and the money are stolen. Dr. Nils Debruuk, played by Kristoffer Joner, is captured and Hunt and Luther are attempting to interrogate him.

Wolf Blitzer of CNN is reporting the horrific news of three separate bomb blasts, one in Rome, in Jerusalem and in Mecca. The damage is catastrophic. Debruuk is gleefully watching as his vision, his manifest, his life belief is being played out on CNN.

Solomon Lane, played by Sean Harris, the architect of the New World Order sent the authorization to Debruuk via his phone. After determining he won’t cooperate without having his pointless manifest, akin to the ramblings of a mad man, read on the air he won’t give them his phone password. As Blitzer begins to read, Debruuk unlocks his phone which contain the plans for a unique nuclear bomb which cannot be defused.

On the tarmac at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Hunt and his team are met at a C130 Transport by IMF Chief Alan Hunley, played by Alec Baldwin. Hunt is heading to Paris to extract John Lark, an Apostle, and return him to Hunley.

At this point, we meet CIA Director Erica Sloan, played by Angela Bassett, and her agent August Walker, played by Henry Cavill. Sloan and Hunley debate authority as the window to make the Paris rendezvous is closing the decision to send Walker stands.

As Hunt and Walker arrive in Paris, a type of smart bracelet emitting a low frequency electronic wave is necessary to gain access to the event where the White Widow, played by Vanessa Kirby, is being held. While Walker and Hunt are reading the scanner verifying John  Lark, the Apostle who is securing the Plutonium from the White Widow, who is the daughter of the arms dealer Max, played by Vanessa Redgrave, the run into Ilsa Faust, played by Rebecca Ferguson, the MI6 spy who is on assignment.

Mission: Impossible Fallout delivers a flurry of wild, shocking and unnerving moments, and like a ticking timebomb fills every second with adrenaline pumping, over the top, action.

Never before seen stunts, lighting strikes during the sky diving sequences, helicopter crashes, which Cruise did fly during the dogfight scenes, car chases, underwater rescues, and motorcycles chases with speed of light action through the streets of Paris.

Of course as it is Mission: Impossible the tried and true tricks of the trade common to all the MI films, the facial masks, which is a constant, trademark move, the staged titillating and pivotal scene, and of course the talent which rachets this MI into the stratosphere.

Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Alec Baldwin each with their idiosyncrasies all reprise the roles which audiences are accustomed to seeing them. Angela Basset handles this type of role with finesse; she is a bad ass and every one believes it. Rebecca Ferguson is back as Ilsa Faust, MI6 Spy still indebted to her government.

Michelle Monaghan is also back reprising her role as Julia Hunt which gently ends her storyline without the usual ‘what ever happened to’ questions. Old storylines which had been left open are now nicely closed. Vanessa Kirby, The Crown’s Princess Margaret, is a nice addition to the familiar cast.
