Money News: DOW, European Markets Up; Asian Markets Down; Nikkei Barely Recovers

The DOW Jones Industrial Average, continued to defy analysts who predicted a market crash, closed the trading week up with strong triple digit gains setting the tone as the rally continued across the pond with mild gains and strong performances throughout the European Markets.

The DOW opened the trading week strong followed by a decisively sharp decline, plummeting more than 200 hundred points,  the DOW rallied with strength with steady gains, throughout the week to end the trading week up at 18,024.06 (+183.54/+1.03%). Opening at 18,024.06, the DOW held a day range of 17,859.27-to-18,028.89.

Gainers include Apple Inc (+3.57/+2.85%) with a closing price of $128.81 per share, Intel Corp (+0.84/+2.58%) with a closing price of $33.40 per share, Home Depot Inc (+2.47/+2.31%) with a closing price of $109.45, and Nike Inc (+1.93/+1.95%) with a closing price of $100.78.

Losers for the week include Chevron Corp closing down at $108.98 per share for a loss of (-2.11/-1.90%), Visa Inc closing down at $65.76 with a loss of (-0.29/-0.44%), Microsoft Corp also closed down at $48.60 for a loss of (-0.07/-0.13%) and Verizon Communications Inc closing down at $50.43 per share for a loss of (-0.03/-0.06%)

Active for the week included Apple Inc moved 46.18M shares in medium trading to close up at $128.81 per share for a gain of (+2.85%), Microsoft Corp in light trading moved 28.76M shares closing down at $48.60 per share with a loss of (-0.13%), General Electric Co in light trading moved 22.69M shares, closing up at $27.31 per share for a gain of (+0.85%),  and Intel Corp in light trading moved 21.45M shares closing up at $33.40 per share with a gain of (+2.58%).

The NASDAQ closed up at 5,005.39 for a gain of (+63.97/+1.29%).

The S&P 500 also closed up at 2,108.29 for a gain of (+22.78/+1.09%).

World Markets

The ten most watched world markets experienced a 60/40 split as the North American Markets, including the DOW Jones Industrial, S&P500, NASDAQ, Canada's S&P TSX Composite, the European Markets including London's FTSE 100, CAC 40 of France, and Germany's DAX, and Japan's highly traded Nikkei 225 all closed up. Mexico's IPC, and the Asian Markets including the Hong Kong Hang Seng, the Shanghai Composite and SENEX of India all closed down.

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225, began the trading week up and remained consistent throughout Monday and into Tuesday where the Nikkei hit the week high sustain steady trading until Wednesday where the Nikkei plummeted sustaining sharp declines for the remainder of the week. With the early week gains the Nikkei managed to close the trading week up, at 19,531.63 with small double digit gains of (+11.62/+0.06%). 

Gainers for the week include Toto Ltd (+131.00/+7.71%), Nitto Denko Corporation (+370.00/+4.81%), Japan Tobacco Inc (+170.50/+4.05%), Trend Micro Inc (+120.00/+2.95%).

Losers include Fujitsu Ltd (-146.20/-18.43%), Yamato Holdings Co Ltd (-153.00/-5.69%), Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd (-35.00/-5.09%) and Tobu Railway Co Ltd (-23.00/-4.03%).

Active on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group Inc, in 20 straight weeks of strong trading, moved 167.32M shares, and closed down at ¥225.80 for a loss of (-1.27%), Fujitsu Ltd, also in strong trading, moved 104.91M shares to close down ¥647.00 for a loss of (-18.43%), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc, in medium trading moved 87.28M shares to close down at ¥838.30 for a loss of (-2.06) and Unitika Ltd, in light trading, moved 34.06M shares to close down ¥59.00 for a loss of (-1.67%).

FTSE 100

London Markets opened the trading week up, hitting the week high and continued to gain momentum though Monday. A slow decline on Tuesday marked the remainder of the week with small peaks matched by sharper declines throughout the balance of week and finished the trading week up at 6,985.95 with small double digit gains of (+25.32/+0.36%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include Lloyds Banking Group PLC (+5.82/+7.52%), Anglo American PLC (+61.50/+5.57%), Rio Tinto PLC (+113.50/+3.93%) and BHP Billiton PLC (+43.00/+2.75%).

Losers include Hargreaves Lansdown PLC (-30.00/-2.44%), Aberdeen Asset Management PLC (-11.50/-2.42%), Severn Trent PLC (-43.00/-2.02%) and TUI AG (-22.64/-1.85%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group PLC moving 400.11M shares in intense trading, closed up at €83.20 for a gain of (+7.52%), Glencore PLC, in light trading moved 25.57M shares to close up at €313.25 per share for a gain of (+0.97%), Barclays PLC in light trading moved 23.71M shares to close up at €255.07 per share for a loss of (-0.09%), and Vodafone Group PLC, in light trading moved 22.70M shares to close down at €229.65 per share for loss of (-0.39%).

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Sang Index began the trading week struggling with a sharp declines on Monday. Opening Tuesday the Hang Seng rallied peaking for the week Wednesday with minimal market dips throughout the remainder of the trading week and never fully recovering from the early sharp declines the Hong Kong Market closed down with triple digit losses.

The Hang Seng closed down at 28,133.00 with triple digit losses of (-267.34/-0.94%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include China Resources Land Ltd (Hong Kong) (+1.80/+6.84%), China Overseas Land & Development Ltd (Hong Kong) (+1.45/+4.68%), New World Development Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.95/+1.55%), Henderson Land Development Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.95/+1.55%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes Bank of China Ltd, in intense trading, moved 515.54M shares to close down at HK$5.35 (-3.26%), China Construction Bank Corp also in intense trading moved 379.62M shares to close down at HDK$7.57 (-1.56%), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, also in intense trading, moved 328.21M shares to close down at HK$6.71 (-2.33%), and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp in strong trading moved 140.55M shares to close up $HK7.30 (+0.27%).

Losers for the week include China Resources Power Holding Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.40/-1.69), Lenovo Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.18/-1.37%), China Resources Land Ltd (-0.35/-1.35%), China Shenhua Energy Co Ltd (-0.25/-1.23%).
