Money News: DOW Closes Up; European, Americas Close Up; Asian Split

The Dow Jones Industrial, after feeling the sting of a bear market fought the rocky start and deep declines and managed to rally, pulling itself up of the abyss and ending the week strong with a solid triple digits gains.

The DOW opened Monday February 8, 2016, up at 15,993.39 and immediately began a decline, rally pattern and managed to close the day up at 16,027.05.

Stocks opened Tuesday down 41 points at 15, 986.40. Maintaining a consistent rally/decline pattern the DOW by midmorning at fallen 72 points before the rally which brought the DOW back to 16,026.74. Tuesday afternoon was a roller coaster of decline/rally which ended with the DOW closing at 16,014.38.

Wednesday the DOW opened up at 16,044.37 and by midmorning hit the week high of 16,122.62 before a sharp and steady decline that resulted in the market closing Wednesday sharply down at 15,914.74.

Stock opened sharply down on Thursday at 15,683.40. A brief and almost non-existent rally was matched by a deeper decline ushered in the week low of 15,530.82. An afternoon rally brought the Dow to 15,660.18 for the close a gain of 130points.

The DOW opened Friday up on the bounce at 15,757.60 and never looked back as the rally took hold. By mid-morning the DOW had gain 126 point and continued to rally. By close of trading the DOW reached 15,973.84 to close the week with strong triple digit gains.

The DOW closed the trading week up with dramatic triple digit gains at 15,973.84 (+313.66/+2.00%). The DOW held a day range of 15,691.62-to-15,974.04.

Gainers include Groupon (+0.65/+29.02%) with a closing price of $2.89 per share, Intercept Pharmaceuticals Inc closing up at $120.22 per share for a gain of (+25.93/+27.50%), ROVI Corp closing up at $20.84 price per share (+2.96/+16.55%) and Columbia Sportswear Co closing up at $55.54 per share for a gain of (+7.60/+15.85%).

Losers for the week include LPL Financial Holdings Inc closing down at $16.50 per share for a loss of (-8.76/-34.68%), Liberty TripAdvisor Holdings Inc closing down at $19.92 with a loss of (-4.24/-17.55%), Qlik Technologies Inc (-1.81/-9.32%) with a closing price of $17.61, and Activision Blizzard Inc closing down at $28.12 for a loss (-2.40/-7.86%).

Active for the week included Cisco Systems Inc in solid trading for the week moved 49.75M shares closing up at $25.11 per share for a gain of (+1.74%), Activision Blizzard Inc, in strong trading moved 42.85M shares, to close down at $28.12 per share for a loss of (-7.86%), Apple Inc in solid trading moved 40.35M shares closing up at $93.99 per share for a gain of (+0.31%), Facebook Inc in medium trading moved 36.18M shares closing up at $102.01 per share with a gain of (+0.10%).

The NASDAQ closed up at 4,337.51 for a gain of (+70.67/+1.66%).

The S&P 500 also closed up at 1,864.78 for a gain of (+35.70/+1.95%).

World Markets

The Ten most watched global markets ended the week split 70/30. All major New York Markets, the DOW Jones Industrial, S&P500 and the NASDAQ closed up.In the Americas Mexico’s IPC and Canada's S&P TSX Composite both closed up.

The three top ten watched Central European Markets, London’s FTSE 100 and Germany’s DAX and CAC 40 of France all closed up.

The highly traded Asian Markets felt the sting of the bear’s mauling. The Sensex of India the only Asian market to survive the bear’s mauling with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, the Shanghai Composite and the highly traded Japanese Nikkei 225 succumbed to the bear and closed down.

The Nikkei225 closed the trading week down at with triple digit losses of (-225.40/-1.32%).

Gainers for the week include Yamaha Corp (+407.00/+15.23%), Marubeni Corp (+56.00/+10.63%), Furukawa Electric Co Ltd (+25.00/+10.33%), Sharp Corp (+16.00/+10.00%).

Losers for the week included Denka Co Ltd (-64.00/-12.85%), Tokuyama Corp (-20.00/-12.27%), Toshiba Corp (-22.20/-11.18%), Mauri Group Co Ltd (-146.00/-8.30%)

Active on the Nikkei 225 include Sharp Corp, moving 395.92M shares to close up at ¥176.00 for a gain of (+10.00%), Mizuho Financial Group Inc moving, in 58 straight weeks of strong trading, moved 316.80M share to close down at ¥181.70 for a loss of (-4.57%), Toshiba Corp in medium trading moved 141.41M shares to close down at ¥176.30 for a loss of (-11.18%), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc in soft trading, moved 125.70M shares to close down of ¥538.20 for a loss of (-3.51%).

FTSE 100

The London Markets closed up at 5,707.60 with triple digit gains of (+170.63/+3.08%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include Anglo American PLC (+35.05/+10.68%), Antofagasta PLC (+16.00/+3.72%), Standard Chartered PLC (+15.60/+3.57), Burberry Group PLC (+33.00/+2.78%).

Losers include Berkeley Group Holdings (The) PLC (-178.00/-4.99%), Inmarsat PLC (-48.00/-4.49%) and Persimmon PLC (-74.00/-3.63%) and SKY PLC (-38.00/-3.56%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Glencore PLC in strong trading moved 144.68M shares to close up at €102.15 for a gain of (+2.48%), Lloyd Banking Group PLC moving 142.69M shares in strong trading, closed down at €61.80 for a loss of (-1.55%), Vodafone Group PLC, in strong trading, moved 78.76M shares to close down at €207.00 per share for a loss of (-1.55%), Tesco PLC, in medium trading moved 56.81M shares to close up at €174.60 per share for a gain of  (+2.77%).

Hang Seng Index 

The Hang Seng closed up at 19,288.17 with triple digit gains of (+105.08/+0.55%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include Bank of East Asia Ltd (+1.20/+5.50%), Wharf Holdings (+1.75/+4.92%), China Merchants Holdings (International) (+0.75/+3.75%), China Life Insurance Co Ltd (+0.46/+2.68%)

Losers for the week include China Resources Power (Holdings) Co Ltd (-0.52/-4.15%), Cathay pacific Airways Ltd, (-0.26/-2.22%), Want Want China Holdings Ltd (-0.11/-2.00%), CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd (-1.75/1.81%).
