China Set on Increasing Air Defense Boundaries

The People’s Republic of China has recently announced the extension of the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, establishing an extended militarized area further into what was recognized as international waters.

“The United States remains deeply concerned that China announced the establishment of an East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone -- that's the ADIZ I mentioned earlier.  This appears to be a provocative attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the East China Sea, and thus raises regional tensions and increases the risk of miscalculation, confrontation, and accidents,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

Announced by China without consultation, the United States does not recognize the newest boundary lines and has asked China to reconsider and rescind the recent changes to its air defense zone.

Working closely with regional allies, Japan and South Korea, the United States is committed to engaging in conversations to encourage confidence building between regions.
