Weinstein Gallery Extends Raumlichtkunst Exhibition

In response to the deep interest and enthusiasm for Raumlichtkunst (c.1926/2012)by German-American artist Oskar Fischinger, Weinstein Gallery has extended the exhibition to February 10th, 2018 and hosts a lecture and exhibition tour with Oskar Fischinger curator and archivist.

This is the West Coast premiere of the HD three-projector reconstruction by Center for Visual Music and follows exhibitions of the work at the Whitney Museum, New York in 2012 and again 2016-17; the Tate Modern, London; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, Australia.

On Wednesday, January 31st, join Weinstein Gallery as it hosts a talk and walk through of the exhibition with Cindy Keefer, curator, archivist and director of the Center for Visual Music (CVM).

Keefer will discuss CVM's work preserving Fischinger’s film legacy, his influence on animation and visual music, and the process of restoring his original 1920s nitrate film to reconstruct his historic performances as the HD installation Raumlichtkunst (c.1926/2012). Keefer will also illuminate Fischinger's relationships with Hilla Rebay and The Guggenheim Museum in the 1940s, and with the San Francisco Museum of Art in the 1950s.

Keefer is the editor of Oskar Fischinger (1900-1967): Experiments in Cinematic Abstraction, a 2013 monograph distributed by Thames & Hudson, published by Eye Filmmuseum and Center for Visual Music.

About Raumlichtkunst (c.1926/2012):

This extraordinary avant-garde film experience is an HD black box installation, meticulously restored by the Center for Visual Music (CVM) from Oskar Fischinger’s original 1920s 35mm nitrate film, and then digitally reconstructed for exhibition with accompanying music by Varese and John Cage and Lou Harrison. Because few records of the original events exist, this reconstruction captures the concept and experience of the performances rather than representing one particular show. Raumlichtkunst was included in Artforum's Top Ten lists for the year 2012.
