Carrie Mae Weems, (1953) creator of the Kitchen Table Series, is the first African American women to have a retrospective of her work featured at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Imogen Cunningham, (1883-1976) known as the grandmother of photography, began taking pictures of the plants in her backyard, and this transformed into a career as a celebrated botanist photographer. She championed the cause to have photography recognized as an artform.
