Killer Whale Review – Surprising, Two-Hander Survival Thriller Delivers Suspense

Killer Whale, from Plaion Pictures, presents a surprisingly intense survival thriller as best friends become stranded in an atoll after a recently released whale mistakes the lagoon for its cage and hunts anyone within the boundaries.

The film begins with two girls in wetsuits debating who would handle the feeding at a well-known World of Orca marine mammal park. She enters the tank.

Immediately the film cuts to Maddie, played by Virginia Gardner, is working the late shift at the local diner. Her boyfriend, Chad, played by Isaac Crawley, arrives and explains he covered for her with Trish, played by Mel Jarson, and told her you were home practicing the cello. Just as they were about to leave, a man, carrying a shotgun walks in and demands all the money. Chad and the robber fight and he manages to shoot the robber who leaves limping. The sound of the blast damage Maddie' hearing. They chase the robber into the parking lot and in an unforeseen twist, the robber slams into Chad and he is killed.

One year later we see Maddie, now with hearing aid, wearing the same waitress uniform and her cello, now sitting gathering dust in the corner. Suddenly, Trish bursts into her apartment and explains we are heading out for a much needed vacation. After a little coaxing, the two are relaxing on the beach remembering the memorable moments in their journey as friends.

We see that Trish is the wild child of the duo and Maddie, especially now, more sedate and still in mourning for the life she lost on that fateful night at the diner. They meet Josh, played by Mitchell Hope, who runs the local excursion booth, and he tells them about the orca who has been in captivity for 20 years, alone in a tank.

So, Trish coaxes Josh into taking them into the park at night, and as Maddie has always wanted to see the orca, she sneaks into the aquarium, and the orca shows up. Just then, the caretaker is fishing a piece of garbage out of the tank and falls in. This is when we understand that the orca is extremely predatorial and Maddie turns back to the window and sees a headless body and blood trail.

The security guard calls the owner.

The next day, the three of them are jet-skiing toward a natural sandbar cove in the ocean. Maddie is floating on a raft, and Trish and Josh are living it up. Suddenly, something rams into the jet ski and the pair go flying. Maddie sees the accident and the fin of the whale. Trish makes it to the float, and just as Josh grabs Trish's hand, the orca pulls him under.

This leads into Act III, where the two are trapped, in the scorching sun, without water or shade, miles from shore. The moments tick away, night follows day, soon the trauma induces, like a confessional, the darkest of revelations, as the two are trapped on a rock in this against all odds fight for survival thriller.

Killer Whale is a surprisingly intense, suspenseful ocean drama and extremely well-acted.

Virginia Gardner and Melanie Jarnson, who carry the majority of the film, deliver strong emotional performances, and are also courageous as the costumes are minimal.

Riveting and gripping, Killer Whale is available on digital download in the UK and Ireland on Monday, May 18, 2026.
