Russian Critics Named the Best TV Series Of 2021

At the end of the year, the main Russian cinema portal Kino-Teatr.Ru traditionally asks leading Russian film and television critics from various publications to name the top three Russian TV series and justify their choice.

The survey involved 20 experts working with Time Out, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Vedomosti, Argumenty i Fakty, Komsomolskaya Pravda, Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Forbes, Ekhoom Moskvy, SRSLY, Gazeta.Ru , "Kino-Teatr.Ru", "Around TV", Meduza, "Telescope", "ProfiCinema" and other media.

This year, there has been an abrupt growth in the number of projects: the total number of serial films has exceeded three hundred. Kino-Teatr.Ru, as usual, suggested that experts limit themselves to projects of more than 4 episodes, released on TV and streaming platforms. These turned out to be 229 (in 2020 - 152), of which 47% fell on the Internet sites (in 2020, the series of streaming services accounted for a third of the content).

Thus, it can be stated that the television series industry is now experiencing a truly golden age. Television does not give up and even cooperates with streaming, attracting to its projects an audience that has long since said goodbye to TV. New services are being born, established players are actively producing their own content, competition for subscribers is growing, and at the same time the number of independent YouTube series is growing, where, in addition to games, interesting documentary and animation projects arise.

The experts mainly chose their favorites among projects not related to television broadcasting.

Kino-Teatr.Ru announces that the best series of 2021, according to critics, was the project "Vampires of the Middle Band" (video service Start, 8 episodes, directed by Anton Maslov). The second place is taken by "Khrustalny" (KION online cinema, 10 episodes, directed by Dusan Gligorov). The third line is occupied by "Vertinsky" (KION online cinema, Channel One, 8 episodes, directed by Avdotya Smirnova).

Russian Entertainment Media Announce Leading Actresses of the Decade

Broadcast leaders have changed in 2021. The first place among the critics was taken by the online cinema KION, which took 40% of the prize places in the tops (of which 10% accounted for the Vertinsky series, produced with the direct participation of Channel One), another 30% of mentions were made by the video service Start, but the projects of last year's leader - Premier platforms - collected only 12% of the likes of experts.

This site is on the third line. Less popular this year is Kinopoisk, which recently abandoned the HD set-top box, and other services and TV channels.Of the 229 proposed titles, 20 critics included 22 projects in their triplets, 10 of them were mentioned more than once, more than three times - a total of 6 TV series. It should be noted that the last three figures practically do not change from year to year, regardless of the growth in the total number of evaluated projects. This suggests that there is always a core of preference, even within the fragmented and heterogeneous community of television and film critics.

The absolute winner of the year with a two-fold margin in points - the series "Vampires of the Middle Lane" . 12 out of 20 critics mentioned him in the top 3, of which 8 put him in first place. Khrustalny got six mentions in the top three - four first places and two second places. "Vertinsky" also has six mentions in the top three and three first places.

On the fourth and fifth lines of the rating - "Big Second" from the video service Start and the project of the Premier platform "Out of myself" . They scored an equal number of points and mentions, but Viktor Shamirov's series has an advantage in the form of a "gold medal" - one first place. Natalia Meshchaninova 's series "My Mom's Penguins" , also shown on KION, is the last in the six projects that received more than three mentions. Five experts mentioned the project.

"This year, despite the pandemic and other difficulties, has been very rich in high-quality and really worthwhile TV shows. It was not easy for critics to choose only the best three. Because they had to choose from a huge number. Also, as a result of the year, one can indicate that at last online cinemas and television channels stopped seeing each other as only rivals and began to find a mutually beneficial format of interaction. The results of such successful experiments can be seen in our rating, " summed up the editor-in-chief of Kino-Teatra.Ru Zhan Prosyanov .
