Hollywood's annual awards season is in full swing as the expected and unexpected are picking up steam heading into the final week of Academy Award nominations voting as award pundits are preparing their predictions for Gold Derby.

Following last week's Golden Globe awards, the Director's Guild and Screen Actors Guild, also coming off a tumultuous and victorious year, announced award nominations.

As the SAG nominations honors actors of the films, no single director or film is nominated. As the awards season films gel, the expected films, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Oppenheimer, along with American Fiction and The Color Purple, landed ensemble cast nominations which is the equivalent of Best Picture nominations.

The DGA announced nominations for the coveted DGA award, which has been a predictor of the Academy Awards Best Director for some time. Barbie Director Greta Gerwig, Oppenheimer Director Christopher Nolan, and Killers of the Flower Moon Director Martin Scorsese were all named as was Poor Things Director Yorgos Lamthimos, and underdog Director Alexander Payne for The Holdovers.

Also included were first time director's Celine Song for Past Lives, Cord Jefferson for American Fiction, Manuela Martelli for Chile '76, Noora Niasari for Shayda and A.V. Rockwell for A Thousand and One.

Also noticed by the DGA, Director Mstyslav Chernov for 20 Days at Mariupol, which debuted at Sundance 2023 and chronicles the Russian siege of Ukraine city Mariupol and the horrors of war.

The National Board of Review held its annual gala this week and while the awards were announced in advance of the event, the excitement and thrill as the award season continued to gain momentum was palpable.

As the winners were not surprises, the star-studded event brought celebrities from both coasts and retirement to fete Martin Scorsese's epic western thriller Killers of the Flower Moon. Academy Award winner Daniel Day Lewis, who has for all intent and purposes retired from the entertainment business, although hinted at a possible return, was on hand to present Scorsese with his winning trophies. Lily Gladstone, who also won a Gloden Globe for her performance received the Best Actress award and landed a SAG nomination.

The National Board of Review may have added the necessary notice to the little film that could, A24's The Holdovers, to bring the performances of Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, to the attention of the entertainment community, as both also won Golden Globes for their performances and landed SAG nominations.

Oscar Winning Director Calls for Investigation

Bong Joon-ho, director for the Academy award winning film Parasite, is calling for an investigation into the zealousness of the Korean paparazzi and police, in the death of Parasite actor, Lee Sun-kyun, 48, who had been repeatedly questioned over alleged drug use in a sweeping crack-down by Korean police.

"In a nationally televised news conference on Friday, Bong and other artists, writers, performers and producers questioned why police repeatedly summoned Lee in the presence of TV cameras and whether they had inappropriately leaked information about the investigation to media," NBCnews.com reported.

The extensive use of vilifying character assassination and paparazzi style exposure on Lee, is largely considered to have contributed to his alleged suicide. Lee was found dead, in his car of an apparent suicide.

Lee was first implicated by South Korean police in a nationwide crackdown in October 2023, and for two months was repeatedly threatened, harassed, and vilified, over alleged actions which were brought to the police by an informant, and remained unsubstantiated. Before his death Lee filed a lawsuit against the informant, a hostess at a party who dosed the actor, allegedly she was attempting to blackmail him.

"I am sincerely so sorry to have let you down even by being implicated in such an unethical issue," he said in a nationwide broadcast in October when he was questioned for the first time," NBCnews.com reported.

South Korea also has the highest suicide rate of any country, and culture and custom often dictates the decision to end any embarrassment or humiliation which alleged or actual violations that have become public knowledge may have caused.

South Korea has intensified prosecution of drug related offenses especially by those who exhibit ability to influence the population and has targeted members of the arts and entertainment community, intellectuals, and humanities community.
