The Artist, Hugo Win Big at 84th Academy Awards

The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film homage to early Hollywood, won big at Sunday’s 84th Academy Awards taking home three of the top six coveted statuettes.

Hosted by Billy Crystal, the three hour tribute to Hollywood’s finest talent, the OSCARS stayed true to award season predictions naming The Artist as Best Picture in a nine film category and honoring French Director Michel Hazanavicius as Best Director.


 

Academy Reveals 2020 Student Academy Award® Winners


 

Best Leading Actor honors went to first time nominee Jean Dujardin, for his work as the silent film star of The Artist and Best Leading Actress honors to Meryl Streep, in this her seventeenth nomination, for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Weinstein’s The Iron Lady

Best Supporting Actress honors went to first time nominee and awards season favorite Octavia Spencer, for her role as Minny Jackson, a Black Maid in 1960’s Mississippi, in DreamWorks sleeper hit The Help and in a season that broke all boundaries in both nominations and wins. 

Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Beginners, portraying a gay man who remained closeted throughout his long term marriage and only found the courage to admit his sexuality after her death.

Martin Scorsese’s epic Hugo, nominated for a record eleven OSCARS, also took home five awards, all in technical, and throughout the evening received accolades by every winner for his vision, dedication and devotion to movie making.


Academy Spotlights Filmmakers with Disabilities With Virtual Program In Honor of ADA 30th Anniversary


The Artist also won Best Score while Best Song distinction went to Walt Disney Pictures The Muppet’s. Best Animated Feature honors bypassed the double nominated DreamWorks team for Paramount Pictures RANGO. Best Original Screenplay went to Woody Allen, for Midnight in Paris ending at twenty-five year slump, for the consummate angst filled New Yorker. Best Adapted Screenplay honors went to The Decedents, starring Best Actor nominee George Clooney.

The 84th Academy Awards presentation, as it was all about the movies, included guest appearances by who’s who of Hollywood talent paying tribute to the entertainment industry and a stunning Cirque du Soleil performance that received a three minute standing ovation.
