Biden on AI

President Biden, over the past year, has directed his administration to begin to work with leading technology companies as Artificial Intelligence innovation presented a deep dividing line in American society.

During his remarks on the initiative Biden said, "Companies have agreed to find ways for AI to help meet society's greatest challenges — from cancer to climate change — and invest in education and new jobs to help students and workers prosper from the opportunities, and there are enormous opportunities of AI."

He presented, in October of 2022, an AI Bill of Rights, the first of its kind ever, which, as many would hope would be followed and incorporated into the innovation structure of technology companies who utilize AI to advance agendas. Unfortunately, the advent of AI has presented serious problems in creative and intellectual property fields and has caused leaders to demand that AI will not be a replacement for humans.

The advancement of technology will leapfrog in the next ten years, bringing into the mainstream greater advancements than the industry has experienced in the last fifty years.

For many Computer Science students and scholars, AI has always represented the opportunity to find solutions to the unanswerable and most challenging questions including those that plague America now.

Depending on the brightest minds has essentially got us into many of these black holes; unending and unanswerable, problems. Homelessness, which plagues nearly every city in the world, has become a blight on society and yet the brightest minds have yet to offer a viable solution. Using technology, objective assistance to find solutions can help societies in the future avoid the same pitfalls of today.

Climate and the Future

DeSantis Sinks Campaign

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is sinking his presidential hopes as he continues to present his unusual platform of ideas, including his recent remarks that some African Americans benefitted from slavery. His anti-woke positioning is a continued effort to introduce to the American people the agenda he has championed in his home state by de-emphasizing racism especially in the public school system.

DeSantis, who could be a presidential contender, appears to be unwilling to tone down his alienating rhetoric which isolates nationwide in order to court the voters in states needed to carry the electoral college. Securing the popular vote, as history has shown does not equate to a White House win, and his recent statement represents a failure on his team to control and temper the remarks until after Super Tuesday 2024.

The first republican debate of the 2024 Presidential campaign season will be televised on Fox August 23, 2024.

"In addition to Trump, the field includes Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy. Other candidates expected to get into the contest soon include former Vice President Mike Pence, ex-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum," reported The Associated Press.

Investigation Expands on Gilgo Beach Serial Killer

As Suffolk County Detectives continue their investigation into the Gilgo Beach serial killings, the suspect Rex Heuermann, 59, of Massapequa Park, Long Island, charged in three of the slayings and considered the prime suspect in a fourth murder, remains behind bars.

Over the course of the week, detectives have reached out to law enforcement agencies in two specific locations, South Carolina, where Heuermann owned property, and Las Vegas, Nevada, where he owned a time share on the Las Vegas Strip and quite possibly stored trophies taken from his victims.

"Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told reporters, adding the investigators would be done at the home in the "next couple of days." During their search of the home, cops have pulled out a lifesize doll with blond hair, wearing a red dress and encased in a wooden and glass cabinet," reported The New York Post.

Theories have also surfaced that Heuermann committed the murders of the Gilgo Beach Four, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Megan Waterman, 22, at his home, where he could control the environment and after the murders unhurriedly manage the disposal preparation and finally drive the 17 miles from his home to the beach.

Police evidence show his family, including his wife of 27 years, and daughter who worked with him at his Manhattan architectural firm, were out of town during the time frame narrowed by evidence including forensic science that pinpoint the time of the disappearance of the victims.

Forensic Science

As forensic science has advanced over the last two decades so has the ability of law enforcement to determine to an exactness, personal identifiers that cannot be altered, such as DNA, fingerprints, imprints gloves worn to mask fingerprints, fibers, dirt, and even trace evidence narrows an investigative search. Technology has become another area of criminal profiling that allows investigators to use cell phone tower information, which is called a polygon, essentially a triangle that like radar can pinpoint activity.

Device addiction is a virtual gold mine for law enforcement. Even the would-be criminal mastermind, those who believe disposal cellphones are untraceable are a product of by-gone era of forensic technology two decades old. Modern forensic technology can ping even a disposal to within a block of use.

"Each, shortly before she disappeared, had been in contact with a different disposable cellphone. Investigators eventually determined that during the workday, some of the phones had been in a small area of Midtown Manhattan near Penn Station, and at night they pinged in the polygon, mirroring the tidal movements of the 150,000 Long Island residents who head into Manhattan each day," reported The New York Times.

When detectives closed in on Heuermann, outside his Fifth avenue architectural firm, it had been nearly ten years and six weeks since the first victim had been found in the search for missing person, Shannon Gilbert, whom detectives have ruled out as one of Heuermann's victims, due to the unconnected evidence.

Although Gilbert fit the profile of the other victims, the neatness or exactness of disposal, which was obvious in the other victims, was not present and eliminated her from the other four adding the possibility of another killer or as detectives have said, in her state, based on evidence she feared for her life and attempted to escape into the marsh lands and succumbed to the elements. Or someone in a truck rolled up beside her grabbed her purse and she let it go, her possession scattered, and the suspect caught up with her and killed her in the open which forced him to rethink his disposal methods.

It is possible, should detectives ever extract a full confession, additional details on each of the remaining victims found will allow Suffolk County detectives to end this grisly chapter in their history.

Long Covid Symptoms and Brain Fog Explained

The long-term neurological and physical damaging effect of the Coronavirus have concerned researchers from the onset of the deadly pandemic. Scientists are just now beginning to understand the neurological damages for those who experienced what medical and scientific experts have defined as long COVID.

Researchers at Kings College London, "have found that people with longer-term COVID-19 symptoms including brain fog showed reduced performance in tasks testing different mental processes up to two years after infection with the virus," reported Neurosciencenews.com.

Brain Fog or cloudy thinking, which many even those who suffered through COVID, did not link the cloudy thinking with continuing post-COVID symptoms.

The major finding of the study is that individuals who have continuing prolonged COVID symptoms exhibited a quantifiable decrease in mental processing capabilities measurable to ten years of aging. The study was conducted in 2021 and 2022, with two rounds of testing involving 3000 participants, nine months apart.

The study reveals deeper concerns of neurological damages brought on by long-term COVID but has not yet linked the possibility of early onset of age-related neurological decline due to long-term COVID.

Tornado Hits Pfizer Plant Drug Shortages Expected

An EF3 tornado, with wind speeds of up to 150mph, ripped through northeastern North Carolina, on Wednesday, destroying a processing plant and warehouse operated by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.

"The plant produces anesthesia and other drugs as well as nearly 25% of all sterile injectable medications used in U.S. hospitals, Pfizer said on its website. Erin Fox, senior pharmacy director at University of Utah Health, said the damage "will likely lead to long-term shortages while Pfizer works to either move production to other sites or rebuilds," reported CBSnews.com.

Dangerous and deadly weather has escalated over the last three years has caused extensive damage throughout the middle Atlantic states, especially in Kentucky, which has become a notable target in weather related catastrophes, suffering a deadly F5 tornado two years ago, devasting flash flood which killed 43, including four siblings that were swept away in August 2022, and now more flash floods. To the north New York and Pennsylvania have also experienced devasting and deadly flash floods

A heat dome has settled over the southwest bringing record high temperatures from Phoenix as far north as Salt Lake City, Utah, which according to Forbes.com, "On July 22, Salt Lake City set a daily record high with thermometers reading 105 degrees, while Phoenix set yet another daily record high at 118 degrees—marking 23 straight days with daily highs in the city above 110 degrees."

It was so hot in Las Vegas, Nevada, this week, that the National Transportation Safety Board was called in to investigate when reports of passengers aboard a Delta Jet passed out, waiting to take off, in the 110-degree heat.

The heat dome is expected to expand across the Southwest this week bringing triple digit temperatures. For the Northeast and Middle Atlantic regions, rain will subside followed by seasonal temperatures.
