Texas Mass Shooting: 14 Children, 1 Educator Dead, 14 Others Injured

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced to the media that a lone gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and "horrifically, incomprehensibly," killed fourteen children and one educator before he was shot and killed by responding officers.

"He shot and killed, horrifically, incomprehensibly, 14 students, and killed a teacher," Abbott said Monday afternoon. "He himself is deceased. It is believed that responding officers killed him," the Austin American-Stateman reported.

The shooter, Salvador Ramos, 18, lived locally in the city of Uvalde, Texas, 85 miles south of San Antonio, Texas is said to have abandoned his vehicle outside the school and entered the building with a handgun, it has also been reported that the assailant had a rifle. He was killed and the threat neutralized by responding law enforcement.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital used Facebook to relay updates on the unfolding emergency and reported receiving up to 13 students through ambulance and buses, and it remains unclear how many were injured, in addition to those who were pronounced dead at the scene.

"What happened in Uvalde is a horrific tragedy that cannot be tolerated in the state of Texas," Abbott said. "He shot and killed — horrifically, incomprehensibly — 14 students, and killed a teacher. Mr. Romas, the shooter, he himself is deceased and is believed that responding officers killed him," CBSaustin.com reported.

A town of nearly 16,000 residents, Uvalde is 75miles north of the Mexican border. Robb Elementary School is located in an upscale area of the town, with 535 students enrolled. The student population was comprised of 52 white students and 479 Hispanic. No African Americans students are enrolled. Classes for the school year were scheduled to end in two days.

A message on the Robb Elementary Webpage provided parents with instructions on reunifying with their children: "Robb Elementary Parents, please do not pick up students at this time. Students need to be accounted for before they are released to your care. You will be notified to pick up students once all are accounted for Reunification Site for Robb Students: Robb Elementary students are being transported to the Civic Center for reunification. The Civic Center will be under a Secure Status until all students are account for. Parents please do not pick up students at this time. You will be notified to pick up students once all are accounted for."

The Robb Elementary School Shooting comes just ten days after a lone gunman walked into a Buffalo New York supermarket and shot and killed 10 and injured three.
