Comedic Web Series "Livin' The Dream" Explores The Struggles Of Women Trying To Make It In The World Of Entertainment

Livin' The Dream, a comedic eight episode web series premieres Thursday, July 9 on livinthedream.tv. The series follows eccentric Kit Scanlon (Laura Campbell) who quit her job and cashed out her 401k to follow her cinematic dreams.

After a successful film school run, Kit finds herself at a crossroads. With her first big feature shelved, Kit now faces middle age, the fear that she peaked while in film school, and the possibility that she might not be the indie director she always wanted to be.

Co-created by the Spurlock sisters, Kim Spurlock and Mai Spurlock Sykes, Livin' The Dream, captures the struggles of making it in the world of entertainment. The duo was inspired by their own experiences and the lives of those around them to create the series.

"I was barreling towards 40, I felt myself reconciling a new-found and bewildering desire for sweet domesticity along with the familiar grittiness that had kept the flames of ambition smoldering in my gut for so many years. It became harder to write, harder to focus... That's how "Livin' the Dream" was conceived," says Kim.

"The idea morphed into an art meets life comedic meditation of, well, Kim's life. The lead character, Kit Scanlon, is not Kim. But there are elements of her in there, and of me," says Mai. "We turned the series into a potty mouthed, pop culture obsessed examination of Kim/Kit's attempt to reach the next stage in her career. We threw in a lot of our self-doubt, loathing, and recrimination. In so doing, we learned a lot about ourselves as artists," she adds.

The series also focuses on a female driven narrative which the sisters feel is a vital element in their work and is oftentimes overlooked in entertainment. "Change comes only with time and effort. I hope women can empower one another by featuring one another's stories, to set up a different paradigm for the next generation," says Kim.

"Half the world is female. Next time you are in the crowd look at the person beside you. There is a 50% chance she is female and a 100% certainty that she has a story to tell. We just need to listen," adds Mai.
