SFiFF To Honor Iconic Actor Edward James Olmos With The Lifetime Achievement Award

The Santa Fe International Film Festival announced they will present its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to acclaimed actor, director, and activist Edward James Olmos on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe, NM.

A powerhouse of talent and a pioneer for Latino representation in Hollywood, Olmos has captivated audiences for more than five decades. He is perhaps best known for his Oscar®-nominated performance as real-life educator Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver (1988), a role that continues to inspire generations.

He earned an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Lt. Martin Castillo in Miami Vice (1984-1989). He also portrayed Abraham Quintanilla, the father of Tejano music icon Selena, in Selena (1997), starring Jennifer Lopez in the breakout role that launched her acting career. Other notable credits include the films The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982) and American Me (1992), the latter of which Olmos produced and directed.

Olmos made his breakthrough in Luis Valdez's groundbreaking play, Zoot Suit (1978), later reprising his role in the film adaptation (1981). His commanding presence in the iconic series Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009), and his roles in Blade Runner (1982) and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017), cemented his place as a science fiction icon. He has also lent his voice to animated classics like the beloved Pixar film Coco (2017), Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind(1985), and The Road to El Dorado (2000).

Beyond the screen, Olmos has been a relentless advocate for underrepresented voices. As a co-founder of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, Latino Film Institute and Latino Public Broadcasting, he has helped shape the cultural landscape for future generations. 

Previous recipients of the Santa Fe International Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award include Bryan Cranston, Oliver Stone, Catherine Hardwicke, Godfrey Reggio, Tantoo Cardinal, Shirley MacLaine, John Sayles, Jay Roach, and Sterlin Harjo.
