Someone Great, a Netflix original film, tells the story of three friends, in a magical city, who for more than a decade were the other’s lifeline and suddenly the hard work paid off, and man was it disruptive. 

Written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson Someone Great stars Gina Rodriguez, DeWanda Wise, Brittany Snow and Lakeith Stanfield with Rosario Dawson, Alex Moffat, Michelle Buteau, Peter Vack, Rosario Dawson, and RuPaul.

Someone Great begins at the intersection of the best of times and the worst of times. Today, aspiring music journalist Jenny Young, played by Gina Rodriquez, has been dumped by her long-term man, Nick, played by Lakeith Stanfield. After nine years of building, the end came just when she believed a new chapter was beginning.

She drowns her sorrow in a bottle alone and wakes up the next morning numb, in a state of disbelief. We meet her best buds, Erin, played by DeWanda Wise, as she is trying to wiggle her way out of a commitment conversation with Cynthia, played by Michelle Buteau and Blair, played by Brittany Snow, who can barely hold back in the delivery of marching orders for her still live in ex Will, played by Alex Moffat.

Just as Erin prepares to tell Blair the break-up news, Jenny is on Chat and explaining to both, the news and today, with only one week left before the move to San Fran, and the break up of the trio, Jenny decides today is the perfect day as it is the day for the three of them to essentially play hooky and take Manhattan by storm

The epic final day that the film centers on is one of those moments in life, when the planets have aligned, and life kicked hard, so there was nothing left to do but kick back. So that’s where we start, with our three girls, friends from college, now closer to 30, (where did the time go), have the line on an unannounced SONY music event. No excuses. They are going.

What follows is a day hitting all the haunts where in different days, like maybe yesterday, the girls could go for a selection of modern sedations.

Someone Great has many fun, feel good moments throughout. For someone who spent many hours at pondering life, fate and future in Washington Square Park, teh film captured the feelings of the surrounding NYU neighborhood, with bright eyed student, fresh, ready to challenge the world armed with a degree and idealism.

The film builds nine years of memorable moments within the now defunct relationship as the two who met by chance made it past the terrible twos and thought destiny had actually paved the way, fate unfortunately had other ideas.

We see a collage of moments lost, mile-markers in a relationship that seemed right from the beginning. As the breakup looms, unspoken, with Jenny, running through the very modern ways of handling the distance, without ever thinking that the love of her life was a hidden traditionalist, and suddenly modernity was not in the equation. Her career called and to her there was no question if she should follow. To him, the door that opened for her career closed the door on them.

By day’s end each of the three have faced the baggage that is holding them to a past that isn’t working and are ready to try something new.

Someone Great is a charming look on the new modern romantic comedy. The film is well directed, with both script and direction coming from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Someone Great is her break out piece.

Red Joan Review - Absorbing, A Captivating True Story of International Intrigue

The film makes generous use of drugs and alcohol. The excessive usage, bordering on addiction, was far past the recreational line and for me, I felt it was the wrong message. Two of the three are serious career minded professionals and the booze filled raves and accompanying social media pictures carry a message of acceptance instead of the reality which can mean career assassination.

The film moves between past and present well and doesn’t leave the viewer disoriented. We know where we are throughout.

Dreamscape Immersive Review - Thrilling and Amazing VR Adventure

Gina Rodriguez is a very versatile actress and handles the comedic material, as do DeWanda Wise and Brittany Snow, effortlessly. As it is part romantic comedy drama, the balance between keeping all the emotions on track with the situation, which change instantaneously, would challenge anyone.

Someone Great is a fun look at the next generation millennial's, who are as serious about enjoying life as they are about success. The cinematography of Manhattan, a love affair with the city that never sleeps is real and vividly portrayed. It had me reminiscing. It was fun.
