Breaking News: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Has Died

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Ruth Bader Ginsburg died this evening at her home in Washington, D.C., from complication due to complications of metastatic pancreas cancer. She was 87 years old.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. said of Justice Ginsburg: "Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her -- a tireless and resolute champion of justice."

Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Justice Bader Ginsberg is one of two women who had served more than twenty-five years on the court. In its history, only four women have been appointed to the court. At the time of her death, Ginsberg has served twenty-seven years.

The Justice, who had been affectionally known to an entire generation of adolescents determined to change the treatment of females and minorities, as RBG had attained celebrity status later in life as the details of her struggles, challenges, hurdles and determined fight for equality became known and eventually a feature film.

"The Notorious RBG," as she's sometimes referred to, has spent her career fighting for the rights of women and other marginalized groups (she even co-founded the ACLU's Women's Rights Project). She's lent her voice to countless opinions, and become particularly well known for her scathing, clearly worded dissents, "Teen Vogue reported.

Her death is sure to set off political wars and the appointment of her successor will likely be stalled or blocked, until after the November election.

Ginsburg is predeceased by her husband, Martin, who passed away in 2010 and is survived by their two children, Jane and James and several grandchildren. Unlike the public funeral of Justice Antonia Scalia, and due to the coronavirus, it is reported that a private interment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
