Loren & Rose Review – Perfect, Engaging, Absorbing

Loren & Rose, from Wise Lars, LLC, presents a story of an unusual friendship between a budding director and an aging actress who, influenced by worlds beyond his frame, passes on the wisdom of her life.

The film begins with an estate sale as we hear the curator, played by Gia Carides, precisely explaining how each of the pieces should be catalogue while the voice over of Loren, played by Kelly Blatz, leads the audience through the tragedies and triumphs of the actress Rose Martin.

He explains he met Rose five years ago, and the film then fades to reply to their initial meeting. He explains he was riding high on his award-winning short film, and he was seeking a star name to attach to his upcoming feature, his first feature, and as he had always been entranced by Rose since her pivotal star making role in the late 1970s. Even as all had cautioned him to steer clear of her as she is unpredictable with excessive baggage, and of course could be "difficult." He wasn't so quick to write her off.

So today they meet: Loren, the budding film director, and the legendary Rose Martin, played by Jacqueline Bissett. The scene, an out of the way, known only to locals, eatery in Topanga Canyon, with a maître d', Phil, played byPaul Sand, who is, at this point, the closest person in Rose's life. On this their first meeting, Loren is early and Rose just a few minutes late.

The two begin with an appetizer, where they begin to get to know each other. She, as her life was splashed across the tabloids, has few secrets, and yet still manages to surprise the new director. As a relative newcomer to the filmmaking world, his budding success has him feeling more confident of the future than realistic.

Before the end of the appetizer, Rose ventures into the details of the film and finds that she is not the only actress Loren is meeting with so she decides instead of appeasing him with accolades of his screenwriting prowess she tells him her opinion of the character and that he may have missed the motivation of the character.

We are the proverbial fly on the wall during this first meeting. As the film progresses to the entrée, Loren explains Rose did get the part and it brought her a new level of fame. She was magnificent and he was, now, very much a Hollywood film director. So, they meet again, in what has become their secluded spot. Today, Loren brings in a second script, another for the resurging Rose Martin. His exuberance is met with her agitation, something is wrong.

Of course, as the film is told in reverse chronology, we have seen the ending and yet we are still not sure of her reasoning: Is she imploding? Are the rumors true? And by the dessert we understand and think the gods cruel.

The Secret Kingdom Review – Entertaining, Imaginative, Family Friendly

Loren & Rose is a perfectly orchestrated two-hander that allows the audience to bridge the distance and age between the two. Told in a traditional three act structure with each of the acts divided by a black card with a short scene introduction and an interpretation. So, as we move into the appetizer, it is the time where the two are getting to know each other; the entrée a relationship has formed and the dessert, of course, a sweet ending.

Over the course of their many encounters, a deep friendship evolves as their love of art, understanding of grief, and faith in life's potential guide them through personal and creative transformations.

Loren & Rose, authentic and intoxicating, opens in theaters Friday, June 23, 2023. See it.
