Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's Longest Reigning Monarch, Dies

Queen Elizabeth II, who served as England's longest reigning monarch, has died. She was surrounded by her family, who were summoned this morning to Balmoral estate after her doctors announced they were concerned for her health.

Following announcement of the Queen's death, the Royal Family official website went black with an image of Queen Elizabeth at her coronation, and the announcement "Queen Elizabeth II – 1926 – 2022." A brief statement below her image stated, "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Prince Philip, Husband of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Dies

One day after meeting with and inviting the newly elected prime minster, Liz Truss to form a government in her name, the Queen doctors issued a statement, "Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral," a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

While ambiguous in word, the concern behind the statement was enough to summon the Queen's four children, heir to the throne Prince Charles, now King Charles, his wife Camilla, Queen Consort, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, as well as grandchildren, Prince William and Prince Harry to Balmoral, the Scotland retreat which has long been known as Her Majesty's favorite place.

Leaders from around the nation have sent notes of concern as the Queen's four children have arrived at her bedside.

At 96, and serving for 70 years, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II clearly honored her vows of lifelong service. She had slowly been incorporating Her son, HRH Prince Charles, who will now ascend to the throne as King Charles, into royal duties, as her health, and the ravages of age had slowly overtaken even her formidable will to remain active.

The death of her husband, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in April of 2021, the longest King consort in history, and abbreviated funeral was punctuated by Her Majesty grieving alone, during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. The striking image became an analogy of her life of service, surrounded my many, yet very alone.

The funeral for Queen Elizabeth II is expected to be held within ten days of her death according to information disclosed from Operation London Bridge, which is the code name for the Queen's funeral plans, and a contingency, should her death be at Balmoral, will have the Queen transported back to London via train. She will be buried at St. George's Chapel.
