American Dreamer, from Plaion Pictures, presents the story of one man's impossible dream to own a home, until a once-in-a-lifetime, to good to be true, opportunity comes his way when a widow offers him her estate for pennies.
The film begins with Phil Loder, played by Peter Dinklage, in his college classroom lecturing on Cultural Economics. A student in the front row, Clare, played by Michelle Mylett, appears to be flirting with him. He is so absorbed, in the topic that the "signs" register and then bounce off him. He lectures on the waning American dream of home ownership. He is living the life of an adjunct professor, at an elite, small, university near Boston.
Cold Wallet Review - Gripping, A Suspenseful Crypto Thriller
He is brilliant and bored, and just does not have the time or inclination to deal with colleagues who believe their obscure work even merits reading, let alone pondering the content for an opinion. So, when the University Faculty Director Jerry, played by Danny Pudi, asks him again for a critique on his paper, Phil just hasn't the heart to explain his real opinion. So, he shifts the topic to more urgent matters, his parking pass, which has been bogged down in red tape for years.
Over the next scenes we understand his life is at a crossroads, the monotony of daily life, stuck with the intellectually inferior, and the blank white page which, wordless, screams loser as he is unable to begin his novel.
He routinely is invited by Dell, played by Matt Dillon, a friend and Real Estate agent, to open houses where he walks around multi-million-dollar properties, enjoying the champagne and hors d'oeuvres, while talking the buyers out of the overly priced homes.

So, after a foray into the big home, he returns to the daily grind of his burdened life. Today, he is looking for condiment in the junk drawer in the teacher's lounge and finds an old newspaper at the bottom of the drawer, with a picture of a sprawling estate, and an impossible deal.
He has Dell check it out, and the house, as lovely as one could imagine, waterfront views, pristine condition, has one little caveat to this supersized miracle of the American Dream, to own the home for a shocking low, and affordable price, even on an adjunct salary, the new owner must allow the current owner, Astrid, played by Shirley MacLaine, to live in the home until she passes.
Phil decides fate has smiled on him, and he cashes out his retirement account, sells all his possessions, and manages to have the exact asking price. Finally, he has accomplished the American Dream.
Reacher S3 Review – An Action-Packed, Intense, Dramatic Thriller
Of course, until Astrid passes, he is regulated to the upstairs apartment, which is not so pristine, but he believes he can wait it out. The view should help as he writes. He meets Astrid, who has both rapier wit and biting sarcasm, something Phil is not accustomed to in others. He explains the plumbing needs fixed, and she explains, she'll have her son fix it.
This sends him into a meltdown, and back to Dell, who promised they would get to the bottom of this. Phil is determined to find out who her children are, and manages to break into the downstairs, and finds a picture, which sends him further into a meltdown. That evening, Maggie, played by Kimberly Quinn, also one of Astrid's children, invites him to dinner. The American Dream has turned into the American nightmare. This ushers in the next half of the film.
The Substance Review – A Shocking, Electrifying Jolt of Injected Adrenaline, A Must See
Capturing a realistic dilemma, American Dreamer is a laugh out loud comedic drama with captivating and convincing performances.
Peter Dinklage is impressive; he can convey a range of emotions without speaking. As the film centers around him, and his angst and caustic repulsion of life, without words he projects this. He is joined by Matt Dillon, Shirley MacLaine, and Danny Glover, all of whom also deliver excellent elevated and impressive performances.
American Dreamer, with a well-written and well told story coupled with a talented ensemble that delivers excellent and compelling performances, is available for UK release on March 17, 2025, through SVOD platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Virgin Movies, Sky Store and Rakuten.
