Saban Films Wins CJ ENM’S Horror Thriller "Hide and Seek"

Saban Films has taken North American, UK and Irish rights to CJ ENM's Joel David Moore directed horror/thriller "Hide and Seek" starring Golden Globe® winner stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jacinda Barrett, Joe Pantoliano, and Mustafa Shakir.

The socially-minded horror-thriller was developed, financed and produced by CJ ENM, Korea's leading film studio of Bong Joon-ho's ground-breaking, multiple Oscar®-winning film "Parasite."

Saban Films Acquires "Long Story Short"

The film is a remake of NEW's 2013 Korean social horror-thriller that was a monster hit, reaching 5.6 million admissions, and grossing over $35m at the Korean box office. In addition to directing, Joel David Moore wrote the English-language screenplay adaptation. The original Korean version was written and directed by Huh Jung.

"Hide and Seek" is a social horror-thriller that builds upon themes related to the widening gap between the upper 1% and the lower class.  As population in urban areas balloon and real estate prices skyrocket, lower-income segments of society are finding themselves continually getting pushed out. This film explores the question of "what if" when those left marginalized decide to take matters, and homes, into their own hands.

When a wealthy businessman follows a lead to find his missing brother, he dives headlong into a twisted underworld of squatters and vagrants that threatens to tear apart his family as he struggles to maintain his sanity.

CJ's Miky Lee, Jinnie Choi, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko served as executive producers alongside Joel David Moore with Yeonu Choi producing the film.

"We are excited to be working with Joel on his remake of Hide and Seek, which had a lasting impression on us all," said Saban Films' Bill Bromiley. "Jonathan gives a chilling performance. We can't wait for our audiences to see his take on the story and its social commentary around the crisis in affordable housing."

Jonathan Saba negotiated the deal for Saban Films with ICM and CAA Media Finance on behalf of filmmakers.  CJ ENM is handling sales in Asia, with Hyde Park handling worldwide outside of North America and Asia.

Saban Films continues to grow its presence in the industry, remaining active in the acquisition, production and distribution space. The company's successes have run the gamut from critically acclaimed theatrical films such as The Homesman starring Hilary Swank, to two of the biggest Fathom events with horror icon and heavy metal mastermind Rob Zombie's 3 From Hell last year and Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, the sequel to the 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which the company partnered on after coming onboard at script stage.

"Hide and Seek" is part of a rapidly expanding slate of English language films for CJ ENM. Following the historic critical and commercial success of "Parasite", which included four Academy Award® wins, including Best Picture, CJ is now working on a "Parasite" television series with HBO, and producing an English language remake of "Extreme Job", which is one of two current collaborations with Kevin Hart and Universal Pictures on English language remakes of Korean hits - the other being the female-driven dramedy, "Bye, Bye, Bye", based on the Korean hit titled "Sunny."

CJ recently tapped award winning director Deon Taylor to direct the gothic horror/thriller "Grave Hill," the company's English language remake of the popular Vietnamese horror film "The Housemaid", and will produce an English language remake of genre bending Korean film SAVE THE GREEN PLANET!, alongside Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen's Square Peg production banner.

CJ ENM has a strategic investment in David Ellison's Skydance Media that will see the companies collaborate on film and TV projects, tapping into libraries that appeal to a worldwide audience.
