Obama Returns from South Africa

President Obama returned to the nations’ capital this week after completing a three country, seven day trip to South Africa where he met with global business leaders, heads of states and next generation visionaries as he continued his efforts to move an emerging Africa forward in the global economy.

The president spent the final days of his trip meeting with the Tanzania head of state, President Jayaka Kikwete, in a bi-lateral meeting discussing the needs of his nation.  Global economic growth has become one of the foremost issues facing every government, Tanzania is clearly no different.

President Obama and President Kikwete addressed those issues in a joint press conference. Congratulating the Tanzania president, President Obama announced that “Tanzania is one of the first four countries selected for our Partnership for Growth, and its investments in key areas, new and improved roads, reforms to the energy sector and unlock economic growth.”

Tanzania is also one of the first participants in an initiative titled “Power Africa” an effort to double access to electricity. President Obama has promised $7Billion in support. The private sector is also committed to funding “Power Africa” with $9Billion.

Obama has continued moving forward with the initiatives discussed at the recent G8 Summit where all agreed Africa is the next emerging continent and announced his own initiative, “Trade Africa” an effort to boost trade within and outside of Africa.

The presidents agreed that many of the same issues, the spread of HIV/AIDS, Food Security, stopping violence against women, and education are the same root causes that result in economic deterioration in every nation.

Joined by President George Bush and former First lady Laura Bush both Presidents and their wives addressed the needs of an budding Africa through separate summits.  President Obama and former President George Bush paid tribute to those lost in the U.S. Embassy bombing in Tanzania.

First Lady Michelle Obama and former First lady Laura Bush participated in a First Lady’s Summit “Investing in Women: Strengthening Africa” Empowering Girls through Education with the First Lady’s of Tanzania.

Raising awareness of HIV/AIDS, stopping violence against women and working to end child hunger were only a few of the issues discussed during the Summit.

With a disproportionate amount of youth in Africa, the issues of education, especially for women, strengthen the economic outlook. Women in many young nations are subject to cultural restrictions. Education is one of those boundaries that women in these nations face.

Empowering the over 800million adolescent females, many of whom reside in these nations, who over the next ten years will reach their late teens and early twenties will result in a force of women dedicated to growth and changing the world.

Edward Snowden Offered Asylum

Edward Snowden, Booz Allen Hamilton employee, accused of stealing NSA secrets has been offered political asylum in several South American countries.

Snowden, 30, has been on the run since May when he took a temporary leave from his NSA position in Hawaii and flew to Hong Kong. After the British newspaper, The Guardian, reveled the Mass Surveillance programs based on information from an anonymous source Snowden, decided to reveal his identity on the belief he did nothing wrong and did not want to hide.

Unsure of his safety and the response of the Chinese government, Snowden flew to Russian in an attempt to find a government that could withstand the pressure of its allies and the United States.  Snowden allegedly remained in a Russian airport.

Allegedly Snowden was able to steal details of specific mass surveillance operations including PRISM, the NSA call database, and a operation called Boundless Informant. He also revealed details of Tempora, a British black-ops surveillance program run by the NSA’s British partner, CGHQ.

In the month that followed the US government has charged Snowden with espionage and theft of government secrets. President Obama asked all foreign governments to return Snowden to the U.S. to face charges.

Before receiving offers from Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua, Snowden had requested asylum from twenty-six countries.

June Job Numbers Unchanged

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released June Job Numbers this week and even the festive Fourth of July holiday couldn’t mask the poor economic growth as the overall unemployment rate remained constant at 7.6%.

The economy added a paltry 195,000 non-farm jobs in June which wasn’t enough to budge the total number of unemployed which remained at 11.8million. Jobs were added in Leisure and Hospitality, Business and professional services as well as the consistent Healthcare profession.

Trending employment sectors include temporary professional services which accounted for 10,000 new placements. Leisure and Hospitality added 75,000 jobs. Healthcare continued to rebound nicely adding 20,000 jobs with more emphasis toward ambulatory services which added 13,000 jobs and hospitals which added 5000 jobs after losing 8000 jobs in May.

As the sequester continues to impact across domestic and defense programs Federal employment is feeling the pinch as well and lost another 5000 position for a total loss of 65,000 jobs over the past year.

The BLS has revised up both April and May job numbers adding a total of 70,000 for both months.

The next job reports will be released in August 2, 2013.

Americans Celebrate Independence Day

From Maine to California Americans marked the 237th Birthday of our nation, celebrating our Independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and marking the day with traditional food, family gatherings and fireworks.

Fourth of July annual fireworks displays were seen far and wide. Traditional picnic’s and barbecue’s were the rule of the day and the American Flag, the symbol of bravery, freedom and democracy, decorated every city, town and village East to West North and South.

The President and First lady hosted the annual Fourth of July picnic on the South lawn that culminated with a beautiful firework presentation over the Washington D.C. monuments.

New York City hosted the largest pyrotechnic display in the country. Millions gathered on both sides of the Hudson River for the twenty-five minute show.

Over 40,000 gathered at Coney Island for the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest with Joey Chestnut devouring a record 69 dogs with buns in ten minutes to maintain his title.

With only a single large scale mishap reported in Northern California, fireworks, the traditional end to Independence Day, wowed, stunned, awed and delighted the masses around the country with amazing night sky displays.
