Updated: Domestic Violence Ambush Kills One Deputy; Injures Six

One Douglas County Sheriff deputy is confirmed dead, four other deputies and two civilians are hospitalized with gunshot wounds resulting from a domestic disturbance call where responding officers were pinned down  wounding the suspect in the early morning exchange.


The suspect, who was shot in the exchange, eluded a multi-agency manhunt for nearly two hours.

In two separate updates via Twitter the Douglas County Sheriff said, “This morning deputies responded to the Cooper Canyon apartments for a Domestic Disturbance. During the investigation, shots were fired and multiple deputies were injured. Five deputies shot by suspect. One Deputy confirmed deceased. Two civilians also shot by suspect. The suspect was shot and believed to be dead and is no longer a threat.” @dcsheriff

No further information on the extent of injuries has been released.

"So far an undisclosed number of Sheriff's deputies were shot Sunday morning and a Douglas County Sheriff's Office SWAT team is at the scene, a home near the 3400 block of County Line Road, according to Lauren Lekander, DCSO spokeswoman," The Denver Post reports.

The Douglas County Sheriff has issued an "Accident Alert" status for the Colorado State Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff, Parker Police Department, Lone Tree Police Department and Castle Rock Police Department, which means the situation is so severe these agencies are unable to respond to traffic accidents.

In the last two hours a Code Red has been issued in the affected area from Highlands Vista Townhomes across E. County Line Road and the entire housing development bordered by E. Shady Lane and E. Blazing Land continuing past SH-470.

"Any citizens in the affected area are required to shelter in place, avoid windows and stay away from exterior walls," the Douglas County Sheriff said via Twitter. @dcsheriff

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office confirmed multiple deputies are down after shots were fired at them early Sunday morning. The severity of their injuries is unknown. The sheriff's office first told 11 News the situation is, "Not looking good for us," KKTV reports.
