Punxsutawney Phil Sees Shadow

Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania Groundhog who, since 1887, has become the annual predictor for winter’s end, popped his head out of his hole-in-the-ground home and promptly saw his shadow, the indicator of another six more weeks of winter, snow, cold, ice and slush, sad news for those of us who are ready for winter’s end.

Groundhog Day is celebrated each year on February 2. According to tradition, if it is cloudy, and the groundhog can not see his shadow then spring is coming early. If, on the hand, the groundhog sees his shadow, as in the case today, then winter will be extended six more weeks.

The media rush to catch the first glimpse as the furry critter make his way out of his burrow, is an annual trek, celebrated by locals with parties and reported globally by the media.

Punxsutawney Phil has even had a cameo in a well known film, "Groundhog Day," as the events are best depicted in the film starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.
