Beauty: Tips to Manage Seasonal Skin Changes

As summer gives way to fall and winter, skin is exposed to a very different environment. Warm weather and higher humidity help slow the evaporation of water from the skin’s surface and heated rooms weaken the skin barrier.

In colder months, outdoor air usually becomes drier, while indoor heating lowers humidity even further. Wind, rapid temperature changes, and long periods in heated rooms can weaken the skin barrier—the outer layer that helps retain water and block irritants.

When that barrier loses moisture, skin may feel tight after cleansing, look dull or flaky, and develop rough patches. Fine lines can appear more noticeable because dehydrated skin reflects light less evenly. Lips and hands are especially vulnerable because they face frequent washing and direct exposure. People who already have sensitive skin may also notice more stinging, redness, or itching. These changes do not necessarily mean the skin has permanently changed; they often signal that the routine and surroundings need seasonal adjustment.

Seven Tips to Prevent Dry, Rough Skin

  1. Use a gentle cleanser. Choose a fragrance-free, nonabrasive cleanser that removes dirt without leaving skin squeaky or tight. Wash with lukewarm rather than hot water and avoid scrubbing with rough cloths. If your face feels dry in the morning, rinsing with water or using a small amount of cleanser may be enough.
  2. Moisturize immediately after washing. Pat skin lightly, leaving it slightly damp, then apply moisturizer within a few minutes. This helps trap water before it evaporates. Creams and ointments generally provide a stronger seal than lightweight lotions. Helpful ingredients may include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, petrolatum, or shea butter.
  3. Shorten hot showers. Long, steaming showers feel comforting in cold weather but can strip protective oils. Keep showers brief and comfortably warm. Cleanse only where needed instead of lathering the entire body aggressively. Afterward, gently pat dry and apply body cream while the skin is still damp.
  4. Protect exposed areas. Wear soft gloves, scarves, and other protective layers in cold or windy conditions. Apply a plain lip balm before going outdoors and reapply as needed. Choose fabrics that do not rub or itch; if wool is irritating, place a smooth cotton layer between it and the skin.
  5. Keep using sunscreen. Ultraviolet exposure continues during fall and winter and can contribute to dryness, discoloration, and premature aging. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to exposed skin each morning. Reapply during extended outdoor activity, particularly around snow, which can reflect sunlight.
  6. Add moisture to indoor air. A clean humidifier can make heated rooms feel less drying. Place it where you spend the most time, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions, and monitor humidity so the room does not become damp. Drinking fluids supports overall health, but topical moisturizer is still essential for limiting water loss from the skin.
  7. Simplify strong treatments. If retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, or acne products begin to sting or cause flaking, reduce how often you use them rather than layering on more products. Introduce only one change at a time. Do not apply active products to cracked or irritated skin and stop using anything that causes persistent burning or swelling.

Best Practices for Smooth, Hydrated Skin in Harsh Weather

Build the routine around consistency rather than complexity. In the morning, cleanse gently if needed, apply moisturizer, then sunscreen. At night, remove sunscreen and makeup without harsh rubbing, use treatment products only as tolerated, and finish with a richer moisturizer. Apply hand cream after every wash and keep small tubes near sinks, in a bag, and beside the bed. For very dry spots, a thin layer of ointment over moisturizer can reduce overnight water loss.

Patch-test new products on a small area for several days, especially if your skin is reactive. Favor fragrance-free products and avoid frequent product switching. Wash towels and pillowcases regularly with a mild detergent and keep them free of heavy fragrance.

During outdoor exercise, change out of damp clothing promptly; sweat, cold air, and friction can combine to irritate skin. In severe cold, reapply balm or protective ointment before exposure rather than waiting until skin feels chapped.

Pay attention to warning signs. Moisturizer should gradually improve ordinary seasonal dryness, but deep cracks, bleeding, a spreading rash, significant swelling, pain, or itching that disrupts sleep deserve professional attention.

A dermatologist or other qualified clinician can identify eczema, contact reactions, infections, or another condition that may need targeted care. With gentle cleansing, prompt moisturizing, protection from wind and sun, and a routine adjusted to the climate, skin can remain comfortable, smooth, and well hydrated throughout fall and winter.
