The 151st running of the Kentucky Derby, the annual spring tradition held at Churchill Downs, and the first leg of the famous Triple Crown in horseracing, kicks off today, with Journalism expected to take the prize.
Not that Journalism, ridden by jockey Umberto Rispoli, with 3-to-1 odds and a tricky eighth pole position, is the only colt favored to win the prestigious prize, and the more than $3million dollar prize paid out to the winner.

"For the second consecutive year, the Kentucky Derby will feature a $5 million purse, paid out to the top five horses in the field. The winner of the race will take home $3.1 million (more than the entire purse was back in 2023), while the horse that finishes second will still pull down $1 million," CBS Sports.com.
Other favorites include Sovereignty at 5-to-1, and Sandman at 6-to-1, however each of these colts are also in tough pole positions. Since 1930, post positions that have yielded the highest percentage of winner are number 5 and 20. The horses in those positions for the 2025 race are American Promise in the five spot, and Owen Almighty, in position 20, both with 30-to-1-odds.

The road to be included in the Kentucky Derby does not start in the Bluegrass state. Through a series of races through Europe, Asia, and America three-year-old horses are awarded points based on the race finish. The top twenty horses are offered an opportunity to race at the Kentucky Derby. Traditionally, the horses are male, and only three times in the running of the Derby have the horses been females. The only hard-fast rule is that the horses must be three years old.
The weather today in Kentucky will be typical spring showers, resulting in a muddy track. The race beings at 6:57EST/3:57pm PST.
Here's to Journalism . . .run the race to the finish.
