At this time, we see a woman, Chrissie, played by Laura Linney, who we later understand hasn’t been back to her home for forty years and only arrived today for the funeral of her mother. We clearly understand that while she is very appreciative of the church’s efforts on her mother’s behalf, we also understand she does not want to be indebted to them. Without being told it becomes painfully obvious she has only returned for the funeral.

As destiny, fate, circumstance, chance, kismet, or God would have it, each of the women find a way to be on the bus when it is departing for France. Of course, the hotel has each of the women sharing a room. The discomfort of Chrissie sharing a room with Lily begins to melt the forty years of heartache between them.

The next day the group tours The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes where sacred Catholicism history states the Virgin Mary appeared and people the world over arrive hoping for a miraculous healing. Our group are also hoping for a miracle, each with faith that could move mountains and believe that this trip and immersion in the sacred water will give them what they are seeking.

Circumstances and the lack of evidence of a miracle cause old wounds to be reopened along the way, forcing the women to confront their pasts. The deep wounds they each hold can only be healed by the power of love and friendship.
