General Colin Powell Dies from Covid Complications

General Colin Powell, former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, who was fully vaccinated, has died from complications brought on by the Coronavirus, his family said in a released statement. He was 84.

In a statement posted on Facebook, The Powell Family wrote, "General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American."

Born in Harlem to Jamaican immigrants, Powell was raised in the South Bronx in New York City. He attended the City University of New York with a bachelor's degree in geology and participated in the ROTC. At graduation he received the rank of Second Lieutenant. He remained in the military raising in the ranks of Commander of the United States Army Forces and overseeing the Persian Gulf invasion, Desert Storm.

"President George H.W. Bush tapped Powell to be the youngest and first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As chairman, he oversaw America's Desert Storm operations during the Persian Gulf war. After 35 years of military service, Powell retired from the U.S. Army as a four-star general," CNBC reported.

His public service continued when he was tapped to serve as the National Security Advisor in 1987. He was appointed to serve as Secretary of State under former President George W. Bush and was instrumental in convincing the U.N. Security Counsel to invade Iraq.
