A Magnificent Life Review – Masterful Animation, Visually Intoxicating, A Must See

A Magnificent Life, from SONY Pictures Classics, presents the story of Marcel Pagnol, the French playwright, novelist, and filmmaker, who believed in his dream and rose to become one of the most prolific writers in the early 20th century.

When we are first introduced to Marcel, voiced by Lauret Lafitte, he has reached old age, and believes he has accomplished all he can, when a friend explains readers would be thrilled to hear his life story. He agrees and shrugs it off and retreats to the comfort of his study, where unfinished projects, and bigger ideas, await his return. A few days pass, and the housekeeper explains someone is here to pick up the first chapter of his memoirs.

The Fantasy Life Review – An Amusing, Romantic Dramedy, Entertaining

Buying time, as he watches an awkward messenger in the courtyard, has someone managed to mangle his bicycle wheel and figures, before the messenger fixes his tire, he will have a chapter ready.

And thus begins the mesmerizing story of Marcel Pagnol, a man who lived many lives, as he transitioned from boyhood to manhood, middle age, and then an old man, with unwritten stories still left to write, but believing the world is for the young.

Soon, Marcel constant companion, his younger self, appears, and one sound seems to activate the memories locked away. We see him busy, as a boy, born in a middle class home, in Marseille, writing, scribbling words on the page, poems that only a mother could love, and she does, and she encourages him to continue, write, every day, write of life, of hope. One day, a sickness that medicine can not cure arrives on his doorstep and his mother, his inspiration, dies.

We then meet him older, married, and settling for a day job, that has made everyone happy. Suddenly, his enthusiasm has returned, as a letter arrives, he has been accepted to teach in Paris. Paris, the center of the French literary world. Of course, no one can understand his passion, this idea of writing for a living, its fool's gold, and even as his wife agrees to move with him, her heart has remained in the south, in Marseille, where his family, siblings and father remain.

For Marcel, Paris is everything he expected, even as they arrive in a downpour, with no place to stay. They manage to find a small apartment, and for Marcel it is his dream. Even when he runs into an old friend, who is now a playwright, and the future seems to be taking off, his wife is unable to see the future with the same wide-eyes wonder and assuredness as Marcel, and she leaves him.

As he enters another phase of life, playwriting is now is sole profession. Of course, just when one believes one has arrived, reality has a way of showing up and erasing any idea of accomplishment, as it did for Marcel, whose first play received poor reviews, and chased him back to the typewriter.

In an instant, suddenly his second play was a huge success, followed by more, and even greater success. He had finally arrived, he believed. Just as he reached a comfortable stride, the Americans invented film! Movies that could actually allow the filmmaker to zoom in close on his actors and even capture a single tear. Marcel found himself draw and the next phase of his life began.

Soon, he was a celebrated filmmaker. However, the brilliance of filmmaking was darkened by the World War II. For the artist, the time was difficult as the Nazi's wanted everything, including all of Marcel's movies.

One day the war was over, and life, and celebration, and hope once again filled the streets of France. This leads to the final act, which finds Marcel once again transitioning to a new life, this time with joy and happiness.

The Optimist Review – Excellent Performances, Breathtaking Scenery, Engrossing

A Magnificent Life is a delight. Visually intoxicating, the exquisite detail captured in each frame transports this captivating narrative with a vivid vibrancy, a richness of both story and animation.

While the animation was flawless throughout, there is a scene where the characters are dancing, which stands out as masterful. Choosing to use animation to tell the story of the writer Marcel Pagnol allows his story to be seen and understood by a wider audience.

The idea of living other lives within the one life has been portrayed beautifully and allows audiences to see the influence that each have on the next, until this mosaic of a single life, is a collection of light and dark, bright memorable moments and those we bury.

Enchanting, from beginning to end, A Magnificent Life, is superb. A must see.
